The shots we didn’t have space for… from our Vol 13 Spring cover home

One of the trickest (and also best) parts of being an interiors magazine editor is not being able to include EVERY image from the inspiring Scandi homes we feature each issue. Take our cover home from our new Vol 13 Spring issue, belonging to Pernille Teglgaard. There were so many lovely shots, showing her home from every angle but only 12 pages on the flatplan. When Pernille and Martin bought their Danish villa, they inherited its disctinct Seventies vibe, which has been replaced with a much more calming look that sees old and new, English and Scandinavian style, and colour and pattern combine.

Here’s my favourite images from the ‘cutting room floor’…

1. The amazing arched feature wall

Pernille painted the arch pale blue to highlight and frame the beautiful window with its stained glass panels. By taking the colour down to the floor, it makes more of this feature. Likewise, a simple shelf positioned halfway between the floor and the arch, provides the perfect space to display a few eye-catching shapes, helping to lead the eye to the window. The lamp is from Flos, with the vase from Louise Roe. Tucked underneath, a mirrored side table from HAY reflects the natural wood floor.

2. Supersized platters as art

Pernille has a weakness for blue-and-white ceramics, with a display cabinet showing some of her favourite pieces. But I also love how she’s been inspired by English country style and hung two large serving platters on the wall above a Thonet cane chair – it’s almost as if her collection wants to spread beyond the shelves! The chair was a flea market find that Pernille had spray-painted white. The cabinet is from Lindebjerg Design.

3. That band of colour

Having made the decision not to fit wall units in her new kitchen, Pernille opted for open shelving. Yet she wanted to do something that would make the kitchen, with its pale grey units, natural wood and white walls, cosy. A bold burst of warm ochre in the gap between the shelf and worktop achieves this perfectly. Pernille also painted the simple shelves the same shade, making them blend into the wall while allowing her kitchenwares and finds on show to really stand out. The shelf and brackets are from Silvan , with the dark ochre paint shade reference NCS S3560-Y20R.

4. Modern shelving and William Morris wallpaper

Don’t you just love this happy mix of new and old? The cubes are a mix of open and closed storage. Pernille refers to her design books regularly and never seems to pop them back in the same spot, hence the display is always changing. The modules are from Trævarefabríkernes Udsalg, with the brass wall light, House Doctor.

5. Such a colourful welcome

When Pernille and Martin bought the villa, the staircase was clad in wooden panels. When these were ripped off, the original baulstrade was missing, so they sourced replica spindles. Now painted NCS colour S1510-R80B, with a floral wallpaper and sunny yellow front door, the hallway is portrays a warm, bright welcome to their home.
