5 ideas to steal from Jeltje’s all-white Scandi home

Step inside Jeltje Janmaat’s home and you will find a bright and airy space layered from floor to ceiling with soothing tones of white. Its mix of refreshing purity and natural comfort is perfectly in keeping with our breezy summer issue of Simply Scandi, which you can order online.

As an interior and brand photographer, Jeltje has an eye for beautiful homes and knew as soon as she and her husband, estate agent Erik, viewed the property they had struck gold. With a new layout and extension plan, they transformed the petite two-storey house in the Netherlands. It is now stylish a modern family home that makes the most of space using an all-white colour pallet and natural light.

Here are 5 things we love about Jeltje’s Scandi look:

1. Jeltje’s use of white

As Jeltje loves working with natural light in photography, it’s obvious selecting an all-white colour palette to bounce light around her home was second nature to her. By installing large windows she has allowed warm sunshine to stream through and reflect against the bright white walls. Look how the neutral and coherent backdrop increases the sense of space and adds a serene sense of calm and peace.

2. Her injection of tones and texture

To prevent the white interior from feeling stark we love how Jeltje has chosen furniture and accessories made from classic Scandi materials such as clay, linen and wood to create a warming yet pure vibe. “Things like my ceramic collection and the white-washed furniture have added tones,” says Jeltie.

3. The way Jeltje has streamlined her furniture to perfection

The choice of furnishings has been carefully considered to continue the homes clean, coordinated and contemporary style. You’ll find the pale wood and white HAY dining chairs at Amara and the Ovo high chair from Scandiborn (as she doesn’t do colour), is super fun and matches the adult furniture perfectly.

4. Converting the garage into an extra bedroom

Coming up with the idea to convert the old garage into a master suite has allowed Jeltje to create a ground floor bedroom sanctuary for the fraction of the price of an extension. The large patio doors open straight out into the garden to make the room feel at one with nature. A double-height slanted roof increases the sense of space and character while the beam makes a fabulous place to hang the beautiful Z1 lamp from Ay Illuminate, creating a effortlessly simple focal point.

5. Blending her house into its surroundings

We love how Jeltje has made use of her beautiful surroundings to make the garden an extension of her home. Large patio doors open out for the family to enjoy river views with an eclectic mix of white outdoor furniture that is easy to move around. This macramé style hanging chair is from Loods 5 and set in amongst paper lanterns and textured rug (for a furry friend) make this an idyllic Scandi style outdoor living spot.
