Why we fell for Julie’s natural Scandi home for our Christmas 2023 cover

Who wouldn’t want to be sat just here, enjoying hygge moments with family and friends? That’s exactly what we thought when we saw Julie Wettergren’s dining area. Inspired by the forest, her Danish apartment takes on a very magical feel at this time of year – and we knew this was the shot for our Simply Scandi Christmas Special 2023, with it’s balance of crisp linen with natural textures and pretty styling ideas.

As a jewellery designer, Julie is drawn to nature for both her home and work. “It’s where I find peace on long walks,” she says. “Nature fills more and more of my Christmas with each passing year.”

Be inspired by Julie’s style to create your own Scandi natural dining space…

1. Julie starts with an Advent wreath

Every year Julie makes an Advent wreath, and this Christmas she has combined shades of coral, pink and nude with glittering silver spruce. An advent wreath is a great way to start of your festive styling, using the colours chosen to influence your Christmas decorations as you head into December.

2. Her small but beautiful Christmas tree

A small potted tree fills a corner of Julie’s apartment. She’s raised it up on a small stool to give it more impact. “My tree is decorated with vintage glass balls, heirloom decorations and funky glass candles,” she shares. “But I’ve also hinted at forest adventures in the tree’s pot, with a base of moss and a few red deer, which have a few of the surrounding Christmas gifts.”

3. Her beautifully wrapped gifts

Julie’s used sugary pink and a mix of patterned wrapping paper for her presents, echoing her scheme perfectly. She’s even tucked candy canes under some of the velvet ribbons.

4. The way her decorations continue

When decorating an open-plan room, try to make your Christmas scheme flow around the space – a sprig of foliage here, some baubles lifted from the tree there, or sweet treats in coloured glassware on your coffee table, can all help to bring that Scandi natural mood to life (and of course a house bunny can really help!).

5. Her attitude to nature

Julie loves walking in the woods, “collecting nice things for my Christmas home”. She’s made a simple, rustic wreath that isn’t perfect in shape or form, echoing the natural world. “I love everything about Christmas,” she says, “and it’s nice to hibernate and just have fun with the family at home. It means something extra for me to create a Christmas home that is connected visually in both style and colour.”
