Why we fell for Kristina’s Danish apartment (and Spring covers…)

Our cover home for Vol 9 Spring just feels, well, so light and bright, exactly what you’d expect from a Scandi home at this time of year. Anyone else picturing themselves making a coffee at Kristina’s breakfast bar before heading out onto her pretty balcony? Kristina and her partner Thomas’ apartment is in Copenhagen’s vibrant Vesterbro, tucked away down a quiet backstreet. For Vol 9 Spring’s Simply Scandi, art director Jo and I both knew this was the house for our cover story. And we were spoilt for choice – the living area also made a great cover shot, as did the dining table and the bedroom.

I’ve worked with some superstitious editors over the years, who have had various thoughts about cover shots: one thought green covers were unlucky, another hated yellow, while bedrooms have always been seen as a bit of a gamble when it comes to sales. Perhaps that’s why I love editing my own magazine so much – I get to make the rules. This is our third spring kitchen cover in a row, and does it matter? Nope… going back to my opening thought, it’s about you, the reader imagining yourself right there in that room and feeling inspired, that’s the secret of a great cover.

But there’s more to love about Kristina’s home than our cover shot…

1. It’s a lesson in simple, timeless Scandi style

Looking around Kristin’s apartment, there’s a lovely mix of old and new. This flatlay sums up her look perfectly. We love how iconic brands – like the Royal Copenhagen pieces – are nestled alongside some of her own designs (Kristina has her own pottery brand @bottega_lavanda). Her palette is muted, with soft naturals, touches of blush and accents of blue, with bleached wood and linen fabrics key materials.

2. The way she’s enhanced what was already there

When Kristina and her partner Thomas moved into the apartment, it was a lucky find. They didn’t need to do any major work, just improve what was there. They added more panelling to the walls, fitted more kitchen units and disguised some of the more practical features, like the radiators. Hands-up if you love the painted wall cabinet above? It was a bargain find at 100 kroner, which Kristina painted light grey.

3. Her “love to last” attitude

Kristina loves timeless buys that show great craftsmanship. Her style is “about pieces that last that aren’t too decorated or colourful”. She’s built up a great base of furniture that will easily transition to any future home the couple move to.

4. The way light floods into each room

With white walls and large floor-to-ceiling doors and tall windows, Kristina’s apartment is wonderfully light and bright. Window treatments, where used, have been kept simple, like these natural linen curtains in the main bedroom.

5. That delightful balcony spot

With bustling Vesterbro literally on their doorstep, Kristina and Thomas are lucky to have a balcony overlooking a quiet yard. In the summer, it becomes the natural extension to their 71sq m apartment, with the doors open all day long. The furniture is from Tine K Home.
