Fall for our Vol 10 Summer cover home (it’s hard not to)

Scandi dining room with white table and plaster wall

Our cover home for Vol 10 Summer hits just the right balance of indoor/outdoor living at this time of year. Anyone else imagining themselves wafting through this dining room, wearing a lovely summery outfit – probably something linen – or just me?

Sussi and husband Lars swapped apartment living and the hustle and bustle of Copenhagen for a small town and its former doctor’s residence and clinic. For Vol 10 Summer’s Simply Scandi, art director Jo and I both knew this was the house for our cover story, with the dining room and it’s feature plaster wall, offering a lovely balance of crisp Scandi whites and warmer amber tones.

Now, the last two summer covers have been outside shots, but with our Vol 10 Summer on sale at the end of April, and the weather having been so hit-and-miss lately, I felt Sussi’s light and bright dining room would make a great summer cover shot. And it’s flying off the shelves, with so much love on Instagram too!

But there’s more to love about Sussi’s home than our cover shot…

1. We love Sussi’s use of warm tones

In Sussi’s dining room, the raw plaster, uncovered during the renovation, has been sealed with varnish, lending a lovely warmth to the space, which has been echoed with the wood and cane dining chairs and amber glassware. Look at how the vase in duck egg adds the perfect accent colour – so much so that we used the same shade on our cover.

2. Sussi’s flexible approach to decorating

Sussi has a great style philosophy: “We fall in love with something, take it home and then a new look and space forms,” she shares, which we absolutely love. Allowing your home to take time to develop organically, filled with the finds that mean something to you, results in a home that truly reflects you. At first, the couple tried to keep to moodboards and design plans, but as time went on they found they fared much better being spontaneous with decorating.

3. Her new-look old kicthen

The units were revamped and even repositioned, before being painted a gorgeous shade of blue (LADY in St Pauls Blue by Jotun). Choosing such a strong colour is a bold move, but plenty of white around the blue units, helps maintain that light, airy feel. The vintage chalkboard was picked up at a flea market in Sweden – the couple love browsing for second-hand finds.

4. The way she’s used unexpected colour punches

From a blue feature wall to red-and-white chequered tiles, we love the surprise hit of colour that Sussi’s worked into her home. She’s used it to distinguish spaces, like “a red thread”, that unites this once doctor’s house and clinic into one beautiful home.

5. The IKEA hack that’s so stylish

Sussi and Lars’ bed is from IKEA (now discontinued). It started out as natural wood, but a coat of blue paint has transformed it, along with the wardrobe doors. Adding a splash of this lovely inky blue shade turns the bed into a feature.
