Fall for this Scandi boho home with its natural palette

You’ll find natural materials, every shade of white and plenty of texture in Danielle’s beautiful Scandi boho home in the Netherlands, which extends into the garden come summertime

Danielle van der Reijden can’t remember not keeping herself busy with interiors and decorating. Even when she moved out of her parents’ home at 18, she wanted everything to be perfect. “Although I wanted a very different look to now – all pink!” she laughs. And while her style has changed, her love of interiors hasn’t. She has always loved taking photos too, starting out by snapping friends and family, followed by wedding photography, before turning both her hobbies into a career – styling for brands and producing content. “My passions have become my work and it keeps me busy,” says Danielle

Home is a 1970s house in the small village of Balkbrug, the Netherlands, which the Danielle and husband Marco (and the latest addition to the family – a Pomeranian puppy called Beau), provides the perfect backdrop to her work as a stylist (@ellefotografie). But it wasn’t always the case. Two years ago, with the couple’s two sons, Joost and Dan, off to college, Danielle and Marco decided to move. “We wanted a place we could renovate,” shares Danielle, “and this was a nice challenge.”

The house had a large garden with a beautiful view over surrounding fields and plenty of space inside too. “Of course, you could say that we are still renovating the place three years on,” laughs Danielle.

The couple have replaced the kitchen, converted the garage into their bedroom, decorated throughout in Danielle’s signature natural palette, while also transforming the terrace, which comes into its own in summertime. “My home makes me feel as if I’m on holiday all year round,” smiles Danielle. It’s easy to see why, not only does the house boast its terrace makeover, there’s a new decked area that flows from the living room out, while a three-metre-long table that Danielle commissioned from a local maker means entertaining at home is easy.

Danielle describes her style as “a mix of Scandinavian and boho, with a touch of romance. You’ll always find lots of shades of white mixed with touches of cane around my home.” She loves to mix different high-street brands. “I like to shop at H&M, but also Leen Bakker, Kwantum and Zara Home. Once in a while, I’ll fall for an expensive designer piece, like a new HAY chair for instance.” Danielle loves to style for the seasons too. “In autumn, you’ll see lots more caramel tones popping in but ultimately, my style remains the same – cosy and easy going.”

The couple converted the garage into a light and airy main bedroom, complete with a mezzanine area to relax in. The rug is from iFamy, while the macramé wall hanging came from the maker Manawee on Etsy. The cane and white bedside table came from HK Living. “I love the refined look of dried flowers,” shares Danielle, “you’ll find them throughout my home”

Leading from the living room, there’s an outdoor sofa area, styled in Danielle’s trademark way: natural materials, plenty of texture and neutral shades. The garden furniture is from Kees Smit, while the umbrella is from Maisons du Monde. Danielle and Marco renovated the original wooden porch area, painting it white and adding seating, as well as a fire pit from Cosi Fires. The bamboo seating came from Leen Bakker

Danielle dreams of opening a pop-up store or even having her own B&B, “although it would need to be somewhere hot,” she laughs. In the meantime, she’s happy styling, writing and photographing at home. “I’m such a perfectionist,” she shares. “Sometimes a blog post for a client can take the whole day, but then it’ll get such a great response that it’s worth it. I love the variety of what I do – one day I can be writing about staircases, then next I’m shooting dried flowers. I love it all!”
